One of the hardest parts of job searching is the silence. You send your CV, and then... nothing. Days. Weeks. You don't know if they received it, if they read it, if they rejected you, or if it's still in process.
The reality of the selection process:
The average response time after applying to a job offer varies quite a bit depending on the type of company and country. At large companies with formal processes, the time between application and first response can be two to four weeks. At startups or more agile companies, it can be two to five days. In the public sector, it can be months.
But there's something many people don't know: most companies don't process CVs in order of arrival. They process them when the ATS has already filtered and the recruiter has time. That might be the first day, or it might be three weeks after the offer closed.
What silence means:
Silence doesn't always mean rejection. Sometimes it means the process is still open. Sometimes it means your CV is in the pile of those that passed the filter and are waiting for review. Sometimes it does mean rejection but they didn't notify you because companies don't always send notifications.
What to do while you wait:
Don't wait. Keep applying. The biggest mistake people make is applying to one job and waiting for the response before applying to the next one. The job search process has to be parallel, not sequential.
Every day you wait without applying to anything new is a wasted day.
If more than two weeks have passed without a response from a job offer you really wanted, you can follow up. A short message on LinkedIn to the recruiter or hiring manager: "I applied for position X two weeks ago and wanted to check if the process is still active." Direct, no pressure, no drama.
And in the meantime, use that time to improve your CV for upcoming applications. Each application is an opportunity to refine the process.
Resumelyn helps make that process more efficient. Instead of waiting and hoping with a single application, you can tailor your CV for five different offers in the time it used to take you to do one.
